Welcome

With the implementation of digital technology into cinema, new forms of media consumption become possible. The realistic and three-dimensional presentation of feature films and live-events are only a few of theses possibilities. Unlike 50 years ago the realization of 3D-cinema is no longer subjected to the restrictions of analogue technology. The world-wide increasing number of digital-cinema installations and the success of 3D-films at the box office mark the beginning of a new era.

This paradigm shift soon is going to also take place in the living-room: The keyword "3D-TV" means that the three-dimensional experience becomes possible for everyone. Until now the two domains 3D-cinema and 3D-TV have developed for the most part independendly from each other. On the one hand we have screens that are getting broader and broader and on the other hand we have high-resolution displays that, by the means of digital distribution, bring films, video-games and events into living-rooms.

Eight leading firms and research institutes have formed a consortium in order to develop trend-setting techniques and business-models for the implementation of 3D-media into cinema, TV and videogames. Our project entitled "PRIME PRoduction- and Projection-Techniques for Immersive MEdia-" is state-aided by the German Federal Ministry for Economy and Technology (BMWi).

A schematic description of PRIME's research subjects can be found here.

With this website we would like to invite you to get to know the consortium and its research-projects.
