The department image processing of the Fraunhofer Institut für Nachrichtentechnik Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) is an international center of competence in the field of video processing, video encoding and video broadcast.
It is internationally known above all by its leading role in the domain of standardisation of MPEG- and ITU- image-compresson-processing. It provides active contributions to the topics 3D-TV and MVC (multi view coding).
The HHI works on ultra-high-resolution projection systems (e.g. for stereo panoramas), multi camera systems and 3D-signal processing in multisensorial systems.
This implies, among other things, diverse calibration techniques, robust and realtime-capable depth-analyse from multi-views, 3D-reconstruction of visual scene elements, and the use of depth- and 3D-information in post-production, as well as the efficient data representation of 3D information for encoding and broadcast. The institute belongs to the Fraunhofer Alliance for Digital Cinema.
