The Fraunhofer Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen (IIS) is currently the biggest institute of the Fraunhofer society with the sections IC-design, high-frequency-technology, telecommunication, digital broadcast, video-, audio- and multimediatechnology (inventor of the format MP3).
The institute has several very successful references in the domain of "high-performance camera-systems" (high-speed cameras, industry cameras, the D20 digital film camera together with ARRI, etc.).
Over the past years the institute has worked very successfully on projects in the section of digital cinema and digital film. The invention of MegaCine, a portable recording unit for digital cameras, as well as the specifications of the interoparability for products in digital cinema for the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative), are only a few of these activities.
The project-relevant competences concern, in addition to this, the sections CMOS-image-sensors, colour-picture-processing, real-time picture-processing, camera technology (e.g. HD mini-camera) and data compression.
