The Entertainment Computing Group, part of the Department of Computer Science and Cognitive Science of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen, is actively involved in research and teaching media technology with a special focus on Digital Games – a first at a German university.

Founded in October 2008, our group of researchers and students led by Prof. Dr. Maic Masuch, a pioneer of German computer game research, works on innovative ideas for game design, intelligent tools for the creation and design of interactive worlds, interactive storytelling, as well as on novel 2D and 3D user interfaces for gaming and non-gaming applications. Other current research topics are the connection of learning and play offered through Serious Games, especially Health Games, and the design of media environments for children.

Our approach aims both at academic excellence and applicability to commercial solutions. To support our network of game developers, producers, and technology providers with fresh ideas and technical innovations is always at the heart of the team’s research. This is achieved through industry collaborations in joint research projects as well as through the support of young startups and excellence initiatives.

Residing at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), the Entertainment Computing Group benefits from an interdisciplinary and internationally-shaped research environment. The UDE is located in the European region with the highest density of institutions of higher learning. Created in 2003 by the merger of the universities of Duisburg and Essen, the UDE is the youngest university in North Rhine-Westphalia and one of the ten largest universities in Germany.
